About Me

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where I am also a core faculty member in the interdepartmental Program in Culture, Language, and Social Practice (CLASP). I also hold a secondary appointment in the Department of Family Medicine, at the University of Colorado, Anschutz School of Medicine. Prior to coming to CU-Boulder, I was a Visiting Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. 

Formally trained in both Hispanic Linguistics (PhD, UCLA, 2014) and Sociology (PhD, UCLA, 2016), I am an interdisciplinary scholar of language and social life. In my research and teaching, I bring together theories and methods from Conversation Analysis, Interactional Linguistics, Pragmatics, and Sociolinguistics to investigate language use in both mundane and institutional contexts, exploring how interactants ‘make sense’ with one another on a moment-by-moment basis as they move through interaction. I am particularly interested in situations of contact -- that is, when divergent languages, dialects, cultures, etc. come together in interaction -- with a primary focus on various aspects of the LatinX and Spanish-speaking experience in the United States.
